In 1999, the Bioplex Project started on the campus of West Virginia State University (WVSU). Located in Institute, WVSU is just west of
Charleston, West Virginia and is one of the two land-grant institutions in the state of West Virginia. WVSU is also a historically black university established in 1891 and has evolved into a racially diverse and multi-generational institution offering baccalaureate and graduate degrees.
The Bioplex Project is a multidisciplinary research project in the areas of process control, microbiology, economics, nutrient management, and engineering. The goal of the project is commercialization of digester technology through better understanding and refinement of the digestion processes and optimal utilization of digested effluent streams.
The pilot-plant digester, research greenhouse, and field fertilizer trials were established within the university's Agricultural and Environmental Research Station. Research laboratories and lab-scale anaerobic digesters in Hamblin Hall also support the project. Fertilizer research trials have also been conducted on local farms.
Funding for Bioplex has come from USDA, the WVSU Division of Agricultural, Consumer, Environmental, and Outreach Progams (ACEOP) and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture .
